This painting was a personal one for me as it is of my daughter. The reference image was taken while we where at a small fair in Salem, Oregon. We found a fun house that we went through a gazillion times. The photo was taken in the last room which was a crazy kaleidoscope of neon colors and sound. When you pushed these large colored buttons on the wall the sounds would change. She was mesmerized by this place, I was able to capture a photo of her reaching out to push one of these buttons.
This painting was a challenge for me because the reference had a ton of bright neon colors in it. My paintings usually have much darker color tones and tints in them. I had to make a conscious effort when mixing my colors to make them more luminescent. I accomplished this with layers, washes, and glazing. All-in-all I am pleased with how the painting turned out. It has an ephemeral quality to it that fits the fleeting feeling of the moment. Below is a short time-lapse of my painting process.
